![]() ![]() Start the truck and let it run at 2000 RPM for 2 minutes to warm the sensors. Step 3: Retrieving Key On Engine Running (KOER) codes Turn ignition key to off and remove the Jumper from the STI Connector to the DLC Connector. Write these codes down and label them Continuous Memory Codes. These are read just like the KOEO codes and are also displayed twice. The next codes to be displayed are your continuous memory codes. Do not unplug anything yet or you will clear your continuous codes! Next you will get a 6-9 second pause, then a single flash (separator code) then another 6-9 second pause. If all systems check out OK then you will get a code 11 or code 111 (All Systems Pass) The computer will always display at least one code. The computer will run through these codes twice so write them down the first time and double check them the second. Write down these codes and label them KOEO. For instance a code 23 would look sort of like this…įlash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Your codes will be displayed as a series of flashes and pauses. You will get a series of two or three digit codes depending on your vehicle. With The first codes you will get are going to be your KOEO codes. On the 7.3 liter Diesel you will have to hold the throttle to the floor until after the codes are sent. ![]() On the 4.9 liter you have to hold the clutch pedal in (If Manual transmission) until after the codes are sent. Your trouble codes will also flash out on your “check engine” or “service engine soon” light. Turn the ignition switch to run (do not start) and watch the test light. Connect the negative side of the test light to the negative battery terminal (see illustration below). Stick the positive side of a standard 12-volt test light into the Self-test output pin. Connect a jumper wire (16 gauge braided wire with a male spade connector on each end works great) between the STI Connector and pin #2 (signal return pin) on the DLC connector. You will be looking for a connector that looks roughly like the one below. 1992-1995 is located on the driver’s side front fender apron near the hood hinge. 1987-1991 (maybe older) is located on the driver’s side of the engine bay behind the air cleaner. Locate the Diagnostic link Connector (DLC) and the Self-Test Input connector (STI) on your truck. To me this is cheaper and just as effective as buying a code scanner and definitely a TON cheaper than taking it to the Ford House. This is what I have always done as was taught to me a few years back.
